Exchange
by AKaiser
for Laura & LD Nelson
Before leaving you see the two of you
baking bread. His Grandma's recipe here
last night in this now still kitchen. Braided
just perfectly for the two of you. With
Sadie's news you'll take yourself to the cell
where they have this grandson, this son, held up
for an offense, what offense, can we know.
I've put on my best dress & wedding ring
the one I fixed on those years ago from
Mother's coffret after she passed. I loved
how the green stone shone with light like water.
I'll tread to the jail and offer myself
in bound exchange for my innocent boy.
I'll present the cold case for all of us.
exploration
Design Systems: Personal interpretation of the poem drove imagery of a jail-like setting, with the relationship of a mother and imprisoned son. Green was a referential color. The idea of the mother dressing up to free her son in exchange for herself was direct.
Type: Typography exploration took on several iterations. Initially, the idea was to
wrap the text around the female figure, but later the concept settled on regular hierarchal placement.

Title: STIX Two text Regular
Poem: STIX Two text Regular
solution
The concept of visually placing a doorway to freedom through the mother's body.
The second concept was to place the mother towards the wall as if she's shamed by having to appear to free her son. The exit became a window through the title text as if she can see it while facing the walls.
